El Dorado East Secondary

History of El Dorado East Secondary School

In 1979, El Dorado East Secondary School opened its doors to over six hundred 14+ students. At that time the school opened along the lines of a Senior Comprehensive under the leadership of its first Principal, the late Samuel Ramoutar. Nestled in the foothill of the Caura Mountain, El Dorado became a thriving educational institution that provided and continues to provide various opportunities to stimulate and encourage individual talents.

The school consists of number of buildings inclusive of Technical Vocational Workshops, a Sixth Form block of classes, Laboratories and a Library. The student population totals 1093 and encompasses Forms Ones (1) to Six (6).

Although not synonymous with Columbus “City of Gold”, El Dorado East has earned a reputation as “the Blue Thunder” for its achievements/accomplishments on the football and in other sporting disciplines. Some famous national icons who have thundered on our fields include Clayton Ince, Marc Burns, Daryl Brown, Lendl Simmons, Rayad Ryan Emrit and Sunil Narine. Other accomplishments include current Soca celebrities Aaron St Louis (the Voice) and Akeem “Preedy” Chance for Culture.

Today, under the leadership of the present Principal, Mr. Allan Gonourie, the school can still boast of a number of accomplishments in sporting and cultural activities. Excellence in sports has not been our single aim. We continue to pursue academic excellence and to provide opportunities to broaden the social and intellectual development of our students.

We are mindful of the fact that an effective school must be healthy and our classrooms must be places where learning can be fun.

To this end, we are endeavouring to improve the present climate. At present our school is being perceived by our stakeholders and the general public as a school with “bad students”. This is the challenge we face.
